How to Make a Viking Longboat

The Vikings were good at making boats. Their dragonships and long boats had colourful, striking designs with intricate dragon heads mounted on the bow.

This one wouldn't fare so well at sea, but its easy to make with a bit of corrugated card and some felt tips. It comes complete with seats and oars so your little Vikings can paddle their way to battle.

Perfect as a school project!

Step 1

Using a large cardboard box, use the diagram attached to cut:

One base

Two side pieces

Two head pieces

Two tail pieces

Two seat pieces

Eight oar pieces

Step 2

To construct the main body of the boat, fold the side pieces as shown in the diagram and use Duckling Tape to attach the side pieces together at each end. Then insert the base of the boat between the side pieces and tape along the bottom and sides using the tape.

Step 3

Use a craft knife to score the head and tail pieces along the line shown to create tabs. Glue the head pieces together leaving the tab unglued. Once dry, glue the tabs onto one end of the boat. Repeat for the tail piece.

Step 4

To make the seats, fold over two centimetre tabs at each end of the seat pieces. Decide which seat you want to use as your centre piece for the mast, and add a hole to the middle of it. Proceed to glue your seats inside the sides of the boat spacing them out evenly.

Step 5

To make the sail cut a piece of red card to A5 size. Take a piece of A4 white paper and cut ten strips, lengthways, measuring two centimetres. With the red card placed in landscape, glue five white strips on so they are evenly spaced. Repeat on the back, and make sure to trim off the ends of the white strips.

Step 6

To attach the sail, pierce a small hole at the top and bottom of the sail. Insert a kebab skewer through one end of the sail and out the other. Puff it up a little then add duckling tape to the skewer above and below the sail to keep it in place. Pierce a hole in the middle seat of the boat and insert the sail then secure in place with a dab of strong glue.

Step 7

Decorate the sides of the boat using felt tip pens. To make the boat shields, use the template to cut six circles from different coloured card. Decorate them with coloured pens and attach them to the side of the boat using paper fasteners.

Step 8

Using the template, cut out the eight oars out of corrugated card. Insert a cocktail stick into the top of each oar and secure with strong glue. Poke them into the side of the boat making sure they stick up out of the water

Step 9

Finally, embellish your boat by giving the dragon a face and adding any design you like along that top in pens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great template The video does not match the template. However, if you just take a second to look at the download, it makes total sense. We followed it and easily made a super cool boat that my kids are thrilled with. this is our first one. We've since made a whole fleet for our homeschool history co-op to decorate.
