Granny Square Month CAL
We are celebrating the beloved granny square and have collaborated with 25 crochet designers to create a unique blanket that you will keep for years.
Each square shows the style of the designer that created it, and there are lots of techniques for you to try along the way.
Make sure to share your progress by tagging @knitcrafthq
Notes:
Each square has been designed to measure approximately 20cm by 20cm using Knitcraft Cotton Blend. If you find your square is coming out bigger or smaller, it is worth changing your hook size.
Each square will need to be blocked after making. We would also suggest to block the finished blanket and border.
If adjoining squares have a slightly different number of stitches along the joining edge, simply skip a stitch on the side with more stitches when joining. If more than one stitch needs to be skipped, make sure you space them out evenly. This won't be noticeable overall. It may be helpful to hold the edges together with removable/hinged stitch markers or safety pins when joining

Pattern Notes:
Written in UK terms.
Starting chain ALWAYS counts as the 1st stitch unless otherwise stated.
Each round ends with a slip stitch into the top of the starting chain.
Fasten off and weave in ends at the end of every round.
If you do not want to start the square with a magic ring you can chain 4, slip stitch into the 1st chain and continue by working stitches into the ring you have created.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Use join as you go method to join small granny squares together as follows: on Rnd 2 replace the chain between each tr cluster with a ss in between the tr clusters on other square (the one you're joining to). In corners replace the second chain with a ss into the other corner ch-sp.
If you don't feel confident with this, instead you can make all 4 small squares separately and sew them together using whip stitch through back loops only, to form a larger square.
Small Granny Squares
Using Green, ch4.
Rnd 1: In fourth ch from hook, work 2tr, ch2, [3tr, ch2] 3 times, ss in top of missed ch3 at the beginning. (12 tr, 4 ch2-sps)
Fasten off.
Make next square, using Lilac for Rnd 1 and Yellow for Rnd 2 and using the join-as-you-go method to join to the first square whilst working the second rnd (see Important Information).
Make third and fourth squares in the same manner, first using Yellow for Rnd 1 and Hot Pink for Rnd 2, then using Hot Pink for Rnd 1 and Green for Rnd 2. Join third and fourth squares using the join-as-you-go method to join to previous squares whilst working the second rnd (see Important Information).

Hi, I'm Kayleigh-Marie, or @onehookandathreadoffate on Instagram, I have been crocheting for a few years and have easily compiled a to do list for future projects longer than my arm. I eat, sleep, and breathe crochet, it's definitely an obsession, and I've recently been encouraging my Mum and Granny to have a go too. About a year ago I started learning to spin fibre, although I'd thought of spinning before it was purely by chance, or fate, that I came across a lady who invited me to attend the spinning group she goes to. I really enjoy the whole process from spinning, to dying (with the ever changing hair colours I've had this past year who'd of thought?!), and then crocheting with the wool. Apart from crochet and yarn my other love is our five pet rabbits, Alfie, Bluebell, Daisy, Sixpence, and Peaches, who sometimes make an appearance on my Instagram account, I've had 13 bunnies in total since I was little and I can't imagine life without a bunny or a hook and yarn.

Designer
My name is Eleonora and I am the crochet designer behind the crochet blog 'Coastal Crochet'. Crochet is a huge part of my life and I am passionate about all things crochet related! I live by the sea along the south east coast of England with my husband, three children and our dog, a Miniature Schnauzer called Salty. As a crochet designer I draw a lot of inspiration from the coastline where I live and my Granny Square for 'Granny Square Month' is no exception.
I have had many of my designs published in national crochet magazines. I have hosted two successful blanket 'Crochet Alongs'. The latest being the 'Changing Tides CAL' with people from over 30 countries joining in! It's amazing how social media has allowed Crocheter's to come together from all over the world to share their progress and I love seeing the blankets grow. I share my designs and provide crochet inspiration over on my blog 'Coastal Crochet' www.coastalcrochet.com as well as on Instagram as @coastalcrochet
I love to host crochet workshops and groups… to spend time with other crochet lovers and to spread the joy of crochet is always a pleasure. In my day job I work as a nurse so life is certainly busy!

A crocheter since Easter 2011. Before that I was busy with other crafts such as beading necklaces, card making, felt and some knitting.
It all started with watching YouTube videos and after that crochet became my biggest obsession! I love to play with bright colours and I really enjoy to work on small projects such as seasonal decorations, accessorizes and home decor. I love to crochet blankets too, and some garments for myself from time to time.
My inspiration comes from anything and anywhere! I love to flick through both Japanese crochet and coffee table books and watch documentaries about cities and fashion. Strolls around Edinburgh are inspiring too!
My eyes and heart are always caught in admiration by the colourful and interesting pieces made by Tuija Heikkinen, Virpi (VMSomakoppa), Elisabeth Andree and Haafner Linssen.
You can find some of my patterns both on Inside Crochet and Simply Crochet magazines and at Cut Out & Keep website.
Free photo tutorials are posted on my blog http://homemadeatmyplace.blogspot.com/
I have even an IG account https://www.instagram.com/homemadeatmyplace/?hl=en

ABOUT THE PATTERN
The square is made of 5 motifs, joined together with the join-as-you-go method (JAYG).
You start to crochet the motif on the left (first half diamond, which defines the height of the square), adding the hourglass, the diamond, the second hourglass and then the last half diamond (which defines the width of the square).
Each motif has a different colour to make a very colourful square!
My turning chain is not considered as stitch: in fact, in the same space where I work my turning chain I always add the proper stitch.
All the joining happen on the RS of your work.

Ch3 or ch1 at beginning of each round counts as a stitch unless otherwise stated.
Always change colour on the last yrh of the previous stitch, so that the new colour is on your hook ready for the next stitch in new colour.
Carry yarn along the work when not in use – hold yarn not in use against the working edge and crochet over the yarn to carry it along, so that when you need to use it next it will be close to your hook.
Work over ends of previous rounds as you go to minimise the sewing in.

Hi I'm Helen, I'm an ex-aussie living in the dizzying town of Milton Keynes with my hubby and two small persons. I am a self-taught crocheter (with a little help from the tube) who crochets to keep the lights on, both figuratively and literally. I used to just inflict my love of colour and yarn on friends and family until I applied for a job as a freelance pattern tester with the Knitcraft team who told me I should design instead. So with that confidence boost I've worked with them and other yarn companies writing patterns and am now working on designs of my own. I love making blankets because that's where I can really play with lots of colour and enjoy the sense of achievement when a big project completed.

After studying textiles at college, my hands have always been busy whipping something up, I like to surround myself with creative individuals such as my parents, close friends and even my husband which has rubbed of extremely well on our three children. My passion for crochet has grown very dramatically over the years, it felt very natural for me to start designing my own patterns and sharing them on social media platforms. I find inspiration everywhere especially springtime with all the pretty colours of blossom in the air. My all time fave crochet pattern as to be the Granny Square I will never stop making them.

I learned the basics when I was a small girl, from my lovely Nan, who crocheted so fast that I was totally mesmerised by her hook zipping in and out of her work. I still learn new things every week either from others in person, or online, even if it's just a better way to fasten off, or a simpler way to create patterns and textures. Learning new skills also opens up new pathways in your brain and can stimulate the growth of new brain cells, so it's great that learning to crochet can help you keep an active mind as you grow older.
At the moment, I'm really loving rainbow colours – they're bright and cheerful and fun. I hope you enjoy my 'flower at the end of the rainbow' square, Lynne xx

Designer
My name is Kelly, I'm a mum of 4 children & the designer behind the blog Crafty Cruella. Granny Squares are a favourite of mine to crochet & my go-to project in-between designing.
When asked to design a granny square to fit my style, I really struggled, as I don't feel I have a defined crochet style! I want to sample & make everything, in every colour, using every technique possible.

Joining
Lay out squares in the correct order of 5 x 5 squares, using the image as a guide, or in the order of your choice.
Start working from the bottom right hand corner and take the corner square from Row 1 and the square above it (from Row 2). Hold them with RS facing together and using White, join yarn with a ss to one corner.
Working into back loops only (these are the adjoining loops), ss across the edge to join the 2 squares together. Take care not to work your slip stitches too tightly so that the edges of the square remain flat. If necessary, you could use a slightly larger hook. Do not fasten off. Take the next two squares and continue to join these with a ss through the back loops only. Continue to join the squares in rows then join the horizontal seams in the same way until all squares are joined. Some squares may have more stitches than other so it is best to pin the beginning and end of each square together to make sure they fit nicely. On the sides that have mores stitches, you can skip a stitch and it won't be noticeable. If you need to skip more than one stitch along one side, make sure that you spread out the skipped stitches evenly.
Edging
With RS facing, join yarn to any corner.
Row 1: 1ch (does not count as st), [2dc, 2ch, 2dc] into corner, *work 150 dc across the top edge to next corner, [2dc, 2ch, 2dc] into corner; rep from * to last corner, ss into first dc and fasten off.
Row 2: Join Red to any corner, 1ch (does not count as a st), [2dc, 2ch, 2dc] into corner, 1dc into each dc along each edge and [2dc, 2ch, 2dc] into each corner to end, ss into first dc. Fasten off.
Repeat Row 2 using the following colours: Orange, Teal, Light Blue, Denim, Purple, White.
Note that if you feel that your edges are 'fluting' you can either go down a hook size, or just work [1dc, ch2, 1dc] in the corners.
Fasten off.
Sew in all ends and enjoy your granny square blanket!
