Shaped tiles needed!!
I bought this as an activity for my grand children, overall I was pleased with the results. however all the mosaics were the same and in order to enable the children to do the detailed areas some of the tiles needed to be cut down . There was no guidance on how to achieve this and consequently I ended up with blisters on my fingers in an effort to make them smaller

Overcoming difficulties
Extra tools required to cut tiles, tile cutters do not work. My grandchildren, aged 7 and 9 used jewellery wire cutters, under a piece of fabric to stop the bits flying everywhere. The colours on the packet were not accurate.
Having sorted out the negatives, my grandchildren finished their tiles and were pleased with the results.

How do you cut the tiles?
I didn’t think about it when I bought this but the picture shows many half or cut tiles, yet all the tiles provided are full and made of hard plastic. I do wonder how a person is meant to cut them? I ended up throwing away.

Materials unsuitable for use and impossible to cut
My daughter was bought this as a present for her birthday as she loves mosaicing. She'd very much been looking forward to completing it, however it was a great disappointment. The tiles attach with double sided sticky plastic, making it difficult to reposition them if they're not in a perfect position. The instructions included in the kit make no mention of needing to cut the tiles (though I notice it's been added to the website, however this is no good if you buy in store or if it's a gift). Luckily, having made mosaics before, we had the appropriate tile cutting tools. However because these tiles are both tiny and made of acrylic, it is near impossible to cut them. We perhaps got one or two to cut in half, but minute pieces pinged off never to be seen again. It is absolutely impossible to cut the tiny pieces needed for the eyes or the pieces that need cutting in more than one direction. They're thick enough that I can't see it being possible with a craft knife either (as well as being a dangerous option do so). So what we were left with was a very disappointed daughter who'd spent hours to half complete the coaster and find there's no way to finish it. Unfortunately we also have 3 more of these kits now that will end up in landfill. Considering from the designs that these kits are clearly aimed at children, I'd like to know how Hobbycraft safely expect anyone to complete them and with what tools since actual tile cutting tools don't work on them.
