Even without using the holders the candles would have to go too deeply into the cake in order to stand upright. In the end I trimmed them by a third and they stood upright(ish). They may work better with a flat, dense traybake style cake.

Rated 4 out of 5 by cube from Striking candles I used these candles on my daughter's birthday cake - and they finished the cake beautifully! One thing to note is that due to their length the candles have a tendency to tip over when in the candle holders. I didn't use the holders in the end, just pushed the candles into the cake and it worked perfectly. Very pleased.
