If you're looking to make something special for a loved one, don't feel like you have to be overly ambitious – sometimes simply spending a little extra time on wrapping shows how much thought and love has gone into it. These mache heart boxes are ideal for containing a few little treats, and can be decorated and personalised to your recipient's taste completely.

How to make

Classic Valentine’s Box:

1. Begin by doing a base coat of red paint onto the base part of the box. Let dry.

2. Add another coat of red onto the base. If necessary, add a third coat of paint to build up the colour. If you wish, you can also paint the inside of the box.

3. Remove the heart shaped backing from the lid. Using the red acrylic, paint this with a couple of coats of paint.

4. Paint the other part of the lid white – you may need a couple of coats.

5. Place the red heart backing back inside the lid, and push all the way down so it sits flat. Fill your box with red tissue and some yummy treats to finish!

For the Heart Chocolates

1. Melt some bright white candy melts in a bowl in the microwave.

2. Pour some sprinkles into the bottom of each segment of a candy melts heart mould.

3. Cover with the melted candy melts, and leave to cool until solid. Remove from mould.

Yellow Heart Box:

1. Begin by doing a base coat of yellow paint onto the base part of the box. Let dry.

2. Add another coat of yellow onto the base. If necessary, add a third coat of paint to build up the colour. If you wish, you can also paint the inside of the box.

3. Remove the heart shaped backing from the lid. Using the yellow acrylic, paint this with a couple of coats of paint.

4. Paint the other part of the lid white – you may need a couple of coats.

5. Place the yellow heart backing back inside the lid, and push all the way down so it sits flat. Fill your box with treats.

6. Finish by tying some co-ordinating ribbon around the box, and secure with a bow.

Decoupage Mache Box:

1. Prepare your decoupage papers by ripping or cutting into small pieces.

2. Add a thin layer of glue to a small area on the base of your mache box. Take a piece of decoupage paper that you have cut, and place over the glued area.

3. Use your brush to smooth the paper down, and paint another thin layer of glue over the top of the paper to seal.

4. Continue steps 2-3 until the whole of your box base is covered. Leave to dry. If you want, you can add another thin layer of glue to varnish and seal the box.

5. Repeat steps 2-3 for the heart shaped backing piece in the lid of the box. Leave to dry.

6. Paint the other part of the lid white – you may need a couple of coats.

7. Place the decoupaged heart backing back inside the lid, and push all the way down so it sits flat. Fill your box with treats.

Gold Mache Box:

1. Begin by doing a base coat of gold paint onto the base part of the box. Let dry.

2. Add another coat of gold onto the base. If necessary, add a third coat of paint to build up the colour. If you wish, you can also paint the inside of the box.

3. Remove the heart shaped backing from the lid. Using this as a template, draw around onto the back of your patterned paper.

4. Cut out your heart shape from the paper. Stick to the front of the heart backing piece.

5. Paint the other part of the lid white – you may need a couple of coats. Use the black acrylic to highlight the word 'Love' on the top of the box. Leave to dry.

6. Place the patterned heart backing back inside the lid, and push all the way down so it sits flat. Fill your box with tissue and some yummy treats to finish!

Pink Mache Box:

1. Begin by doing a base coat of pink paint onto the base part of the box. Let dry.

2. Add another coat of pink onto the base. If necessary, add a third coat of paint to build up the colour. If you wish, you can also paint the inside of the box.

3. Remove the heart shaped backing from the lid. Using this as a template, draw around onto the back of your patterned paper.

4. Cut out your heart shape from the paper. Stick to the front of the heart backing piece.

5. Paint the other part of the lid pink – you may need a couple of coats. Leave to dry.

6. Place the patterned heart backing back inside the lid, and push all the way down so it sits flat. Fill your box with tissue and some yummy treats to finish!
