Alan Turing was not a well known figure during his lifetime, but today he is widely celebrated as having played an essential role in defeating Nazi Germany during WW2, having solved the Enigma Code. Turing fell victim to attitudes towards homosexuality during his lifetime and in 1952 was arrested, he has since been pardoned and now features on the £50 note.
