How to Use a Sewing Pattern

To begin any dressmaking project, you’ll need to learn how to use a sewing pattern to bring your design to life and make sure it fits just right.

Step 1: Measure the body and match with the size guidelines. Mark the correct size line on the pattern with a coloured pen, then cut out following these lines.

Step 2: Begin pinning your pattern pieces to your fabric. The grain line should be parallel with the selvedge edge. Measure to ensure the grain line is straight.

Step 3: Cut out pattern pieces using fabric scissors or a rotary cutter and cutting mat. Snip in your notches. Cut out any pieces you may need in interfacing too.

Step 4: Iron on the interfacing pieces to the matching fabric pieces.

Step 5: Following the instructions, sew your fabric pieces together. Before you complete your pattern, check the measurements again the body again.
