How to Make a Craft Roll Snake
This easy craft project is perfect for celebrating the year of the snake this Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year.
Create your own by upcycling some craft rolls with paint and other fun accessories like googly eyes. Perfect for kids, they'll love making and playing with this creature throughout the year.
Why not make a snake in a different colour? Just change your paint colours and your pipe cleaners to match!
You will need
You Will Need
* 6-10 Craft Rolls
* Green Paint
* Yellow Paint
* Dark Green Felt Tip
* 2 Googly Eyes
* Green Pipe Cleaners
* Red Card (you will only need a small piece)
* Scissors
* Glue
* Paint Brush
* Paint Palette
* Pencil
* Blu Tack (you will only need a small piece)
How to make
Mark in pencil a 'V' shape on both sides of each craft roll (slightly off centre - see picture for rough placement).
Cut out all of the 'V' shapes from the rolls.
Paint the craft rolls completely, using the lighter green shade on the inside and a medium green on the outside. To make green paint lighter, add some yellow paint.
Leave these to dry. They may need more than one coat of paint.
Cut a small forked tongue out of red card and attach it to the bottom of the roll (on the inside).
Then, stick googly eyes onto the outside of the roll to create a face.
First, stick a ball of Blu Tack on the underside of the roll. Then, using a pencil, poke small holes in both ends of all the body sections of the rolls (all but two).
On the head roll, make one hole opposite the googly eyes.
For the tail, make one hole in one end of the roll.
The pipe cleaners are for securing the rolls together to create the snake. Practice the finishing technique to make sure none of them fall out of the holes.
Once threaded through the holes, fold the pipe cleaner to the left then back on itself to the right. Then fold the end into the middle point. Squeeze it all together to create a neat 'T' shape.
Start by cutting your pipe cleaners in half - you may need an adult to help with this bit!
Starting with the head, overlap the holes and push the pipe cleaner through them both. Then use the technique in the previous step to secure both ends of the pipe cleaner.
Repeat this step until you've used all of your craft rolls.
