Ch- Chain

St - Stitch

Sl st – Slip Stitch

Dc – Double Crochet

Tss – Tunisian Simple Stich – Insert hook behind loop, wrap yarn around hook, pull through, leave new loop on hook.

Rtn Pass – Return Pass – ch 1, wrap yarn around hook, pull through 2 loops all the way back to the end of the row.

Special Techniques

Pick up loops in Back Bumps

Use the colour techniques below to avoid holes between the colour changes

Changing colours on the Forward Pass: You will need to swap the colours in pattern. Inset hook behind the loop, hold working yarn towards the left, bring new colour up behind current working yarn and pull up a new loop.

Changing colours on the Return Pass: You will need to swap the colours in pattern. Insert hook behind the loop, hold working yarn towards the right, bring next colour up from the left-hand side, pull up a loop

Sl st in tss: Insert hook as if to tss, wrap yarn around hook, pull back through loop and through the last loop on the hook. You will be left with 1 loop on the hook.

Dc in back loops

For the Placemat Step 1

You will need to split your yarn into smaller balls – 6 balls of colour A (Cream), 4 balls of colour B (Blue) and 3 balls of Colour C (Peach). I weighed mine out using a kitchen scale to approx. 6g per ball to avoid running out and having to join more but if you don't want to weigh each ball you don't have to. Just be aware that you may have to join more yarn later in the project if you didn't cut off enough to begin with.

Step 2

Ch 49 with colour A, created slip knot with colour C, put slip knot on the hook and pull through the last loop on hook. 50chs

Step 3

Row 1: turn ch to show the back bumps of the ch. You will pick up the loops under the back bump by inserting hook into back bump and then wrapping yarn around hook, pull back through and leave the loop on the hook (see techniques pictured above). Then pick up next 6 loops in colour A, swap to colour B. Pick up 4 loops in colour B, swap to colour A. Pick up 6 loops in colour A, swap to colour C. Pick up 14 loops in colour C, swap to colour A. Pick up 6 loops in colour A, swap to colour B. Pick up 4 loops in colour B, swap to colour A. Pick up 6 loops in colour A, swap to colour C. Pick up last 4 loops.

Work Return Pass, remembering to change back to the correct colour (see special techniques pictured above). After every forward pass row, work the return pass in the pattern using the same technique before you start next row.

Row 2: Using colour C, work 1 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 14 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 2 tss.

Row 3: Using colour C, work 3 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 10 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss.

Row 4: Same as Row 3.

Rtn Pass for Row 4: When you get to the last 2 loops on the hook (one from the forward pass, one from the return pass), swap to colour A. You will need to introduce a new ball of Colour A, create a slip knot and pull through the last 2 loops on the hook. This counts as the first tss for the next Row.

Row 5: Using colour A, work 1 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 6 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss in colour C. You will need to introduce a new ball of Colour A, insert the hook into the next st, create a slip knot and pull up a loop. Work 1 tss.

Row 6: Using colour A, work 1 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 2 tss.

Row 7: Using colour A, work 3 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 2 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 4 tss.

Row 8: Same as Row 7.

Row 9: Using colour A, work 5 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 10 tss (you will not be swapping to colour C here so you can cut the working end for colour C but leave a long enough tail to weave the ends in later. Keep working across without swapping to the next ball of colour A – you will also cut this working yarn), swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss.

Row 10: Using colour A, work 5 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 10 tss, swap to colour B. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss, swap to colour C. Work 4 tss, swap to colour A. Work 6 tss.

Rtn Pass for Row 10: When you get to the last 2 loops on the hook (one

Step 4

To finish off your Coaster, using colour A, you will need to sl st in each tss along the row (see special techniques pictured). You will then ch 1, turn the coaster on the side and dc in the back loop of the side edge for each row. When you get to the end of that side, you will ch 1, turn again and dc in each of the back loops of the starting ch. Repeat this until you have dc in each back loop around the whole coaster.

Step 5

Weave in all ends and cut off any excess yarn.

For the Coasters Step 1

You can work straight from the yarn ball as you will only need 1 strand of each working colour. If you do want to split the balls you will need approximately 3g of each colour.

Step 2

Ch 17 with colour A, created slip knot with colour B, put slip knot on the hook and pull through the last loop on hook. 18chs

Step 3

Row 1: turn ch to show the back bumps of the ch. You will pick up the loops under the back bump by inserting hook into back bump and then wrapping yarn around hook, pull back through and leave the loop on the hook (see techniques pictured above). Then pick up next 14 loops in colour A. Insert hook into next back bump, create slip knot with colour C, put slip knot on the hook and pull through. Insert hook through back bump of last ch, pick up 1 more loop with colour C. You now have 18 loops on your hook.

Work Return Pass, remembering to change back to the correct colour (see special techniques pictured above). After every forward pass row, work the return pass in pattern using the same technique before you start next row.

Row 2: Using colour B, work 1 tss. Swap to colour A, work 14 tss. Swap to colour C, work 2 tss.

Row 3: Using colour B, work 3 tss. Swap to colour A, work 10 tss. Swap to colour C, work 4 tss.

Row 4: Same as Row 3

Row 5: Using colour B, work 5 tss. Swap to colour A, work 6 tss. Swap to colour C, work 6 tss.

Row 6: Same as Row 5

Row 7: Using colour B, work 7 tss. Swap to colour A, work 2 tss. Swap to colour C, work 8 tss.

Row 8: Same as Row 7

Row 9: Same as Row 5

Row 10: Same as Row 5

Row 11: Same as Row 3

Row 12: Same as Row 3

Row 13: Same as Row 2

Row 14: Same as Row 2

Rtn Pass for Row 14: When you get to the last 2 loops on the hook (one from the forward pass, one from the return pass), swap to colour A using the same colour change technique and pull colour A through the last 2 loops on the hook.

NB: if you want the border to be in colour B, omit this step. Alternatively, you use colour C for border. This is just down to personal preference.
