Cricut: How to Make a DIY Ring Toss Game

Level
Beginner
Time
1/2 day
Budget
30+

Summer’s here which means only one thing: lawn games! Some of the best outdoor games can be made at home using what you already have.

In this project, recyclables otherwise destined for the bin are repurposed into a hoopla set. This project uses a Cricut machine to make a hoopla set, although directions are given within the tutorial to make your hoopla set without one.

This is also a great project to get the kids involved in both the making and the playing!

How to make

You will also need:
* A laptop/tablet with Cricut access
*Cardboard tubes (kitchen roll tubes or Cricut vinyl tubes work well)
*Cardboard boxes
Step 1
Open up Cricut Design space and insert a square onto your canvas. Resize the square to 8 inches. You will need 5 squares in total. If you are not using a Cricut, use a paper trimmer to cut 8 inch squares.

Step 2
Insert two circles, one which measures 5 inches and one that measures 7 inches. If you are not using a Cricut, find two round objects to draw around which have roughly equivalent sizes, and trace them onto card to make a hoop. When this is cut out, it can become your hoop template.

Step 3
Select both circles in Design Space and under the align tab, select centre. This will position the circles evenly on top of each other.

Step 4
With both circles selected, select slice. Remove the centre of the circles so you are left with your hoop. Duplicate the hoop as many times as you wish.

Step 5
Insert your numbers. The font used in this project is called Beefcakes. This project uses the numbers 1-5, but you can use whichever scoring system you wish! This project will have a number in each corner of the hoopla bases. You may wish to position your numbers on your hoopla base so you can adjust the sizes.

Step 6
Cut your project from Cricut Kraftboard (bases and hoops) and vinyl (numbers).

Step 7

*Paint your bases and cardboard tubes in your chosen colours of paint. You may need to apply several thin coats of paint to achieve the colour you want. You may also wish to first paint the bases and tubes with a white paint, as this will make your colours more vibrant.

*Cut a sturdy cardboard box into 8 inch squares. Use hot glue to mount each of your hoopla bases onto the cardboard. This will make them extra sturdy.

*Use hot glue to attach the tube to the centre of the base. This should be done by an adult, as the glue guns get incredibly hot!

Step 8
Use transfer tape to transfer your weeded numbers to your bases.

Enjoy the game!

Use your hoops either as they are, with several glued together, or as a template to cut more hoops from different materials. Have fun experimenting with different materials: heavier materials will make the hoop easier to throw, so several layers of thick cardboard may make the game more suitable for young children.

Enjoy playing hoopla! If you would like to weigh your bases down on a windy day, you could use small bags of sand or rice slipped into the tubes to add extra weight.
