How to make

Step 1
First measure and carefully cut the large cardboard tube into 3 sections measuring 7cm, 8cm and 9cm tall – an adult may need to use a craft knife for this. Paint the sections white and leave to touch dry before applying a second coat.

Step 2
Next make the grass - cut some 3cm wide strips of green tissue paper and fold them together in a 5cm wide bundle. Make different sized triangular cuts along one side of the bundle, and then open out the strips and stick around the bottom of each white painted tube section.

Step 3
Decorate the grass and sides of the tube with paper flowers, created with red, yellow, and orange paper heart and circle shapes cut out using mini craft punches.

Step 4
Now draw some arched windows on the side of each section, and carefully cut them open - again, an adult will need to do this bit. Punch and stick some mini hearts to the doors.

Step 5
To make the roofs, first stick the red, yellow, and green sheets of felt pieces to pieces of white card and leave to dry. Then draw around a circular object such as a saucer on each and cut out. Draw and cut a slit from the outside to the centre of each, and then assemble in a wide cone shape. Glue in place, and then decorate with some round white felt spots.

Step 6
Finally, glue the roofs to the tube sections and leave to dry. Then pop an LED tealight inside each.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great craft project for 7-10 year olds I think this project is excellent in that is well written and uses things most craft families might have around the house. Simple enough for 7-10 year olds but has enough different steps and skills to keep them interested. The 1 star missing is because having put the cone together for the roof, the instructions don’t tell you “how” to affix it to the tube.
