How to make

Step 1

Begin by taking a sheet of watercolour paper, and tear off a thin strip across the bottom longer side. This is just to create a nice torn edge.

Next, measure 4cm up from the torn edge and lightly draw a horizontal pencil line. Use the pencil line as a guide to tear off a 4cm strip.

Tear this strip into two pieces measuring 10cm long. Repeat this process until you have the desired quantity of place settings.

Tear a few more to create some spares.

Step 2

Have a list of names written down as a reference.

Lightly draw some pencil guidelines for the calligraphy on each card front. Draw a base line 15mm from the bottom torn edge. If preferred, draw another ‘x’ height line 5mm above the base line as a guide for the height of the letters. Similarly, draw another line 5mm above the ‘x’ height line as a guide for the height of the capital letter at the beginning of each name.

Step 3

If preferred, try writing each name using a pencil in the calligraphy style you wish to use. This can be another useful reference when writing the place settings in ink.

Test the pen nib and the ink beforehand, try writing the alphabet on a scrap piece of watercolour paper.

Step 4
Use an older small paint brush to load small amounts of ink onto the back of the calligraphy nib. This is more effective than just dipping the nib into the ink.

Step 5

Test the loaded nib onto a scrap piece of paper before starting to write each name.

Begin writing the first capital letter towards the left hand side of the place setting.

Step 6
Re-load and test the nib regularly to complete each name. When the ink is completely dry, erase all the pencil lines.

Step 7

Use the watercolour paints and water to mix a few colours in the paint set pallets.

Create a pallet of soft, muted, natural tones that work nicely together, and test the colours on a spare piece of watercolour paper.

Step 8
Use a fine paint brush to paint a simple floral element to the right hand side of the place setting. Paint the stems in a similar angle to the slant of the lettering.

Step 9
If the name is short, balance the place setting out by painting more than one stem.

Step 10
Some place settings might look nicely painted with smaller leafy sprigs using similar colours.

Step 11
You could also create a beautiful place setting with one single flower head and leaves.
idea%5Fwedding%2Dcalligraphy%2Dplace%2Dcards%5Fstep%2D07.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 12
Paint a different floral for each setting. Try using a limited colour pallet on some of the designs.

Step 13
Add some variety by painting a single leaf stem design on some of the settings.

Step 14
Your beautiful place cards are ready for the big day!
