How to make
Now that you have learnt the stitches, you can put them into practice with this pretty Mandala design. For this creation I used colours 207, 205, 214, 607 and 111 from the Bright Embroidery Floss Pack.
Download and print the Mandala template.
Use a lightbox or a good light source and a fabric pencil to transfer your design onto your pre-ironed fabric.
Place the design into the embroidery hoop. For each stitch in this design you will be using three strands of the embroidery thread.
Following the downloaded thread guide and the stitch guide above, start your design with the purple running stitch in the middle of the Mandala.
Next, add the french knots in blue.
Add a pink and green threaded running stitch to all of the petals.
Satin stitch two petals in green.
Add four sets of stem stitches in orange in the middle of the petals.
Add a french knot in blue to the end of each of the stem stitches.
Add a chain stitch in purple.
Add a chain stitch in green
Satin stitch the next petals in purple and add back stitch around these
Add a split stitch around each petal in orange.
Add back stitches in pink and blue.
Add green french knots around each of the orange split stitches.
Add the purple stem stitches.
Then add a pink back stitch around each of the purple stem stitches.
Add six blue split stitched circles.
Add the orange chain stitched petals.
Add a purple back stitch around each of these.
Go around the whole outline with a green blanket stitch.
Finally add four sheaf stitches to each point of the mandala.
Once you have completed your embroidery, you can turn it into a wall hanging using the embroidery hoop or alternatively this would make a pretty cushion design. To make the wall hanging, ensure your fabric is tight in the hoop, snip the fabric close to the hoop, leaving about a 1cm allowance. Using a glue gun stitch the remaining fabric to the back of the hoop. As an optional extra you can add a piece of felt to the back, this will give the wall hanging a clean finish, perfect for giving as a gift. Finally add a piece of embroidery thread for your hoop to hang.
