How to Quilt a Christmas Stocking

Level
Intermediate
Time

Go traditional this season and have a go at quilting a christmas stocking in classic, Christmas colours. This fun mix of pattern makes the perfect design to adorn your fireplace!

I would heartily recommend a rotary cutting wheel and a cutting board for this project as it will make it so much easier but you can, of course, use scissors if you prefer. Follow the tutorial below to find out how to make.

* Sewing Machine

* Sewing Kit

* Quilter’s Ruler

* Rotary Cutter

* Cutting Mat

* Heat Erasable Pen

* 1 Fat Quarter each of 3 Contrasting Fabrics (for the outer stocking)

* 2 Fat Quarters (for the lining)

* 1 Fat Quarter (for the stocking cuff)

* 3 Fat Quarters of Wadding

* Trims and Embellishments

Step 1

Print the free template and assemble by matching A to A and B to B. The first step is to make enough half square triangle units to create two pieces of patchwork fabric big enough to accommodate the front and back of the stocking template.

To make the half square triangle units, you will need to cut two squares from contrasting fabrics. Each square should measure 5 inches square. The edges of the square should be cut along the grain of the fabric. It is important to measure and cut the squares accurately and a quilter’s square and rotary cutter will help you achieve this.

Step 2
Take the lighter of the two squares and place right side down. Draw a diagonal line from each corner to the opposite corner. Using a heat erasable pen or pencil will give a nice fine line. Always test an erasable pen on a scrap piece of fabric first to ensure it doesn’t leave any marks.

Step 3
Place both squares right sides together and sew along both sides of each line using a ¼” seam allowance. If you don’t have a ¼” foot, you may find it easier to measure and mark the seams.
Step 4
Measure and cut each square in half lengthways and then in half again widthways. You will now have four squares. Now cut along the diagonal lines which were marked earlier to create eight triangles.
Step 5

Open out each square and thumb press the seam to the darker side of the fabric. Once the seam has been opened, press with a hot, dry iron. Be careful not to use the iron to pull the seam open as this can distort the fabric. Using a pair of sharp scissors, trim the overlapping corners from each square.

Repeat this process until you have 96 squares in a mixture of colour combinations.

Step 6

The squares are joined using a ¼” seam allowance into rows or columns which are then sewn together to create a patchwork fabric. You could arrange the squares into a pattern or sew them together randomly as shown in the following image. The squares must all face the same direction so that diagonal lines can be seen running through the fabric.

Once the fabric reaches the desired shape to accommodate the template, iron it thoroughly so that all seams lie flat.

Step 7
Place a piece of the lining fabric face down. Place a piece of wadding over the top of the fabric and then place the patchwork fabric on top of the wadding to create a quilt sandwich. It is important to firmly secure all layers together using either a spray glue or curved safety pins. This will ensure the layers do not move during sewing.

Step 8
Using a ¼” seam allowance and starting from the centre of the sandwich and working out towards the edge, sew along each side of every diagonal line.

Step 9
Your fabric is now quilted. Using the stocking template, cut out one side of the stocking. Flip the template over to cut out the second side.

Step 10
Place the two cut out stocking right sides together and sew together using a 3/8” seam allowance approximately 10 cm down the front edge.

Step 11

Cut a piece measuring 39cm x 26cm from both your stocking cuff fabric and wadding. Place the fabric on top of the wadding and fold in half lengthways sandwiching the wadding into the fabric. Place your sandwich to the top of the stocking with right sides and raw edges together at the top. Pin or clip in place. Fabric clips can be useful at this point to hold all the layers together.

Sew in place using a 3/8” seam allowance. Turn the cuff back to the right side and iron in place.

Step 12
Sew any trimmings in place across the top of the stocking and cuff. If you want to be able to hang your stocking, leave a long tail on one of the ribbon embellishments. This will be turned into a hanging loop. Show hanging loop pinned in place.
Step 13

Clip the stocking front and back together making sure to align the seams and trimmings. Sew together using a 3/8” seam allowance.

Turn the stocking out to the right side and gently push the seams out especially around the foot. Iron gently if needed.

Step 14
Your Christmas stocking is now complete and all ready for the big day!
