Multipurpose Needles
Use the finer ones for tacking, the large eye takes the tacking cotton easily. Use a larger one for finishing overlocking, again the eye will easily accommodate the four threads (unravelled). It is also useful to have a really stout, strong needle for repairs to leather or canvas type material.

For sashiko
They seem to do the job without complaining, haven't tried purpose made sashiko needles. Couldn't buy them in-store so can't give a comparison.
