Top Tips

* Before you start making, we recommend reading through all of the instructions.

* Make sure your fabric is clean, pressed well and cut into 12″ x 19″ pieces if you are using fat quarters.

* If you choose to use by-the-metre fabric, cut the outside and lining fabrics into 12″ x 24″ pieces. The grain lines should be parallel to the 12″ sides.

* Cut the interfacing to a 12″ x 24″ piece. Use a 1cm seam allowance throughout.

Step 1

Using the Mat Preview screen, amend the mats for the lining and outside pieces to 12″ x 19″ (only if you are using fat quarters).

Step 2

Place the 12″ x 24″ interfacing piece onto the FabricGrip mat, fusible side down, and cut.

Step 3

Place the 12″ x 19″ lining fabric pieces onto the mat, right side down if it has one, and cut.

Step 4

Place the 12″ x 19″ outside fabric pieces onto the mat, right side down, and cut.

Step 5
Carefully take your pieces off the mat and organise by piece number. Apply the interfacing to the coordinating lining pieces.

Step 6
Centre the 12″ zip between the lining and outer of piece 6, with right sides together, and the front of the zip facing the right side of the outer piece. Pin in place.
6-2.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 7
Using a zip foot, stitch the zip into place.
Step 8

Centre the other side of the zip between the lining and outer piece. The front of the zip should face the right side of the outer piece. Stitch using a zip foot.

7-2.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 9

Turn the piece so that the zip is on the inside of the sewn pieces. Trim the seam allowances with pinking shears or snip into the curve. Turn back. This is what it should look like.

8-2.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 10

Topstitch along the seams for a more finished look. This can be in a complementary or contrasting colour. Your stitching will show on the interior lining as well.

9-2.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 11

With the zip closed, centre the bum bag front between the lining and front piece 2, with right sides together, lining against lining, and outer fabric against outer fabric. Sew along the flat edge, over the zipper end.

10-2.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 12
Repeat for the other side, trim off any excess zip tape.
Step 13
Fold the side flaps out and press. Top stitch along the sides of piece 2. Your front panel is now complete.
Step 14
Centre the the 9″ zip between the lining and outer fabric of piece 4, with right sides together. Stitch using a zip foot.
11-2.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 15
Centre the other side of the zip between the lining and outer fabric of piece 3, stitch into place.
12-2.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 16
Press well and topstitch along the seams.
Step 17
With the zip closed, centre the hip bag front between the lining and front piece 1, with right sides together, lining against lining, and outer fabric against outer fabric. Sew along the flat edge, over the zipper end.
15-1.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 18

Repeat for the other side. Trim off any excess zip tape.

Step 19

Fold the side flaps out and press. Topstitch along the sides of piece 2. Your back panel is now complete.

17-1.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 20
Fold the two marks on either side of the tab of piece 5 together, and baste in place. This will create a tuck on both pieces.
18-1.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 21
Make the same tuck on piece 7, above the front panel zipper, catching both layers of fabric in the tuck.
19-1.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 22

Place a piece 5 onto the back of the back panel, matching up the notches. Pin and stitch around the outside edge, leaving the side tabs open for the straps to attach to. The right side of the lining should be visible through the open zipper.

Step 23
Place the second piece 5 onto the back of the front panel, matching up the notches. Pin and stitch around the outside edge, leaving the side tabs open for the straps to attach to. The right side of the lining should be visible through the open zipper. Leave a small turning opening un-sewn at the top of the front panel. Use a clip to hold down the lining side so that it remains open for the next steps.
Step 24
Cut your webbing into two pieces, one side should be shorter than the other for the buckle placement, this can easily be altered to taste. The measurements we used were approx 6″ for the short strap and 30″ for the long strap.
28.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 25
Pin the straps onto the side tabs of the front panel, and stitch firmly into place.
29.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 26
Curl the straps into the interior space of the front panel so they are away from the seam allowances around the edge. The zip should be open half way to allow for easy turning. Place the back panel over the front, with the straps inside and pin.
Step 27
Sew around the edges of the bag, be sure to leave the lining side of the turning hole below the seam open. Reinforce the stitches when you go over the straps.
Step 28

Trim off any excess material. Turn the project right side out, through the tuning hole. Take your time and work carefully to avoid tearing the fabric.

30.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 29
Hand stitch the turning hole in the lining closed.
31.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 30
Finish the ends of the straps, be sewing the two D-rings into a fold on the short end, and finishing the end of the longer strap. Reinforce the stitching with an X shape for extra strength.
