A computer and Printer
Free-motion Foot Attachment
Cut a piece of calico measuring 100x30cm. Fold in half, widthways, press and then cut the open edges into a point. Mark the angles with a ruler before chopping them off to check they are equal.
Next using your computer and printer, print off the wording you want. Trace each word on the gluey side of your iron-on adhesive. Go over your lines on the paper backing side too. Roughly cut each word out.
Iron each word onto your chosen felt colours
Cut each word out and peel off the backing paper.
Arrange your wording onto your banner front leaving a space at the top for your dowel (roughly 4cm). Once you're happy, iron permanently in place.
Carefully sew around each word on your machine or by hand. Make sure you only sew through one side of the banner. Add any other shapes or motifs.
Trace another word onto stitch 'n' tear and then place over the top of your felt wording. Using free-motion embroidery, sew this on top in a contrasting colour. Then rip away the paper.
Next, make a tassel. Cut lengths of yarn and tie them together in the middle to form a top. Get another piece and wrap around the lengths to make your tassel. Trim any ends or loops
Fold your banner piece right sides together so all the design is on the inside. Place your tassel in the bottom point and pin everything together. Sew 2.5cm from the top fold, all the way around to the other side, leaving a large gap in one long straight edge.
Trim any corners and points then turn the right way through the gap and press flat.
Using your machine sew along the top edge, roughly 2.5cm from the fold, creating a channel for your dowel. Then top stitch all the outer edges for neatness.
Insert your dowel and add ribbon or string to each end for hanging. Then make a couple of pom-poms and tie them onto one end.
