How to Make a Latch Hook Christmas Tree
Get creative this festive season with a latch hook Christmas tree. It's the perfect way to add a touch of festive spirit to your home and really easy to make.
This project is great for using up your leftover yarn and trying out different colour combinations.
You will need
Mark out your tree shape on the canvas. You will be working on the parallel horizontal threads and not the twisted vertical threads so make sure the canvas is the correct way before cutting your canvas.
Start by measuring 4cm in from the corner and mark with a pen.
Measure 40cm along and mark. This will be the base of your tree.
Find the centre and measure 50cm up, mark this point.
Join each point together to create a triangle.
Now begin marking out the different sections you want for your tree to use as a guide.
Cut away any excess canvas but make sure to leave approx. 4cm around each side.
Mark out a section at the centre bottom of the tree for the trunk. Using Rowan Big Wool in Linen, cut lengths approx. 30cm long. Fold in half and attached using the latch hook tool.
Now take James C Brett Chunky with Merino in pistachio and cut 10cm lengths. Using 2 lengths at a time, start to fill in the first section on the left, skipping every other row.
Using Knitcraft Leader of the Pac in cream, cut 16cm lengths, fill in the next section, working every 3rd row.
Using Rowan Big Wool in Linen, begin with the yarn at the back of the work. Place the latch hook through the canvas and pull through the yarn, leaving a tail at the back. You want to create a small loop. Remove the hook and place into the next hole and pull through the yarn again to create the same size loop. Continue in this way across the whole section, making sure to keep each loop the same size. At the end, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
Using Knitcraft It’s Only Natural in sage, cut 10cm lengths and using 2 ends at the same time, work every other row in the next available section.
Using West Yorkshire Spinner Elements in Cool Aloe, cut 8cm lengths. Using 2 lengths at a time, work on the next section, working each row.
For the next section, use Knitcraft Leader of the Pac in cream and cut 10cm lengths. Work every other row to complete the section.
Using James C Brett Chunky with Merino in Pistachio, cut 16cm lengths. Fill in the next section working every 3rd row
Using Rowan Big Wool in Linen, cut 6cm lengths and work each row on the last section.
Flip your work and cut off the excess fabric, leaving 4/5 squares on each side. Then cut out each corner.
Fold over the canvas at the bottom of the tree and using James C Breet Chunky with Merino in pistachio, stitch the canvas in place.
When you get to the corner, fold over the next side and continue to stitch the canvas down. Repeat on the final side.
Finish off by sewing in any ends.
