How to Make a Violet Beauregarde Costume

Level
Beginner
Time
1 hour
Budget
10 - 30

Violet Beauregarde is the annoying gum chewer who turns purple in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. For a really simple Book Day costume, dress your child head to toe in purple, complete with purple face paint, and pair with this delightful bubble gum bag, gum-chewer medal and golden ticket. We have gone for 'Hubbly Bubbly' on our bag, but you could personalise it with your name or whatever decorations you prefer.

How to Make

Cardboard

Step 1

To make Violet's Chewing gum bag, cut a rectangle of pink felt measuring 23cm x 26cm, and a small one for the strap measuring 3cm x 26cm. Use the templates to cut a fastener from pink felt, letters from yellow felt, an oval from purple felt and 4 bubbles from white felt.

Step 2

Fold the large rectangle in half to form the body of the bag. Fold the smaller rectangle in half too and insert it into the bag at one side at an angle, to form a strap. Glue the strap in place, then glue the sides of the bag together. If you wanted, you could whip stitch the bag together here.

Step 3

Arrange the purple felt oval on the bag with the yellow letters on top to spell “hubbly bubbly” and add the white bubbles. When you are happy with the layout, glue in place.

Step 4

Glue the fastener to the back of the bag, in the centre. Turn the bag around and add a small square of self-adhesive velcro to the fastener and where it meets the bag.

Step 5

To make the medal, cut 2 circles of corrugated card, measuring about 9cm. Glue them together.

Step 6

Cover the card circle with gold duck tape, on the front and back.

Step 7

Cut a length of red ribbon long enough to go over your child's head. Loop it round and use gold duck tape to attach the ends to the card circle.

Step 8

Write “No. 1 Gum Chewer” on the front of the medal in black sharpie

Step 9

For a golden ticket, cut a rectangle from gold card, measuring about 10cm x 20cm. Decorate the ticket using a black permanent pen, giving the time, date and location of the open day at Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. You can personalise this however you like.
