How to make

Step 1

Using the colours shown (Or colours you prefer) roughly squeeze out 1"-1.5" lines onto the wooden slice - It's important that they're arranged light to dark with the lightest colour at the bottom and darkest at the top especially when working with a silhouette.

Step 2

Using a wide brush and starting with your lightest colour at the bottom, gently sweep the paint from left to right, as the paint coats the area, move your brush upwards into the next colour continuing the sweeping motion and blending the colours as you go.

Step 3

Once you've reached a gradual fade like this and you're happy, just leave it to dry for a couple of hours. You can get a copy of the design I used to either trace or use as reference in the downloads section at the bottom of this page

Step 4

Once the slice is dry, draw out your design. Use a soft pencil and press lightly so any mistakes can be erased!

TIP - When painting silhouettes make sure the image is over the lighter painted section so it looks like it's blocking the light.

Step 5

Using black paint or a black posca pen, block out the silhouette leaving the moon blank

Step 6

Paint the moon, I decided to use gold for the moon, you could still use black if you'd like to, I just thought the gold would contrast well with the dark blues!

Step 7

Once your silhouette is dry, you're ready to add the writing and lanterns

Step 8

For the lanterns, paint a small yellow glow onto the area first for extra impact, leave it to dry then add the black lines.

Step 9

Using the white posca pen or a fine brush, add on your lettering, the white works particularly well on the top of the slice as it's the darkest part.

And voila, you should have a beautifully decorated Eid Mubarak wooden slice!
