3D Slotted Holly Decoration

Step 1: Cut about half of the block of clay away (for five decorations) and roll it out to around 4-5mm thickness lifting occasionally to stop the clay from sticking. Use the cookie cutters to cut your shapes, remembering you’ll need two of each shape to make the decorations slot together.

Step 2: To create the gap for the shapes to slot together, measure the thickness of the clay with a ruler then cut out a strip of card to the same width as the clay (this becomes your template). You need to make sure the gap is wide enough for the shapes to slot together but not too wide that they’re loose.

Step 3: Next, measure the width of your shape and make a mark at the mid point, then using the template and a knife or a cocktail stick, cut out the slot.

Step 4: Smooth out the rough edges of your clay using a small paintbrush to lightly brush a little water onto the surface of the clay. Wet the top of the shape and gently rub your fingers over the surface to smooth. Tip: If your clay feels very soft/wet after smoothing just leave it to dry out until it feels a little firmer.

Step 5: Using a cocktail stick, create the hole to hang your decoration from, it needs to be near the top of a slot, but not too close to the edge of the decoration. Using a bit of water, smooth the hole you’ve just created, then use a knife to gently pry up the edges of the shape, flip over and repeat on the other side. Make sure the gap in the slot hasn't opened or closed, gently nudge it with your fingers or a knife to straighten the edge.

Step 6: When your shapes have fully dried check to see if they will slot together, the clay will shrink as it dries and the gap may close a little. If they won't slot together, sand the inner edges of the slot with sandpaper or a nail file (be careful not to press too hard when doing this). The clay will turn a bright white when dry, but a couple of coats of white acrylic paint will brighten it up and seal the surface of the clay.

Step 7: Then you’re ready to decorate however you like! Note that if your acrylic paint isn’t flowing very well, mix in a little water to thin it slightly and make sure there isn't too much paint on the brush. This will help when painting lines and small details. To finish you can add a coat of varnish to protect the paint work or give them a glossy finish, but this is optional.

Step 8: Lastly, slot the two pieces together and add ribbon of your choice to hang your decorations!

How to Make Clay Initial Decorations

Step 1: Draw your desired letter onto a piece of card and cut it out to create a template.

Step 2: Evenly roll out a piece of air-drying clay, then lay your template on top and cut around the letter with a knife. Use the end of a paintbrush or the tip of a pencil to create a hole big enough to thread a piece of twine through. Leave to dry.

Step 3: Once dry, you may need to sand any rough edges. Using acrylic paint and a gold permanent marker, decorate your initial decoration. We've gone for leaves in two shades of green, pink flowers and gold accents.

Step 4: Once fully dry, thread twine through the hole and your decoration is ready to hang!
