6mm (US 10) Knitting Needles

Darning Needle

Pompom Maker or cardboard circles with a 6cm/2.5in diameter

Tension

15 stitches x 21 rows to 10cm/4in over stocking st using 6mm (US 10) needles

 

Abbreviations

St st: stocking stitch (Knit RS row, Purl WS row)

Sts: Stitches

K: Knit

P: Purl

Rep: repeat

K2tog: Knit two together

P2tog: Purl two together

RS: right side

WS: wrong side

 

Actual Size

Child: 44cm (17in) circumference; 16cm (6in) height

Adult: 55cm (22in) circumference; 20cm (8in) height

Pattern

Using 5mm (US 8) knitting needles, cast on 66 (82) sts.

Row 1: *K2, p2; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.

Row 2: *P2, k2; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.

Rep rows 1-2 two(three) more times.

Change to 6mm (US 10) knitting needles

Next Row: Knit.

Next Row: Purl.

The last 2 rows form st st.

Continue in st st until work measures 12(16)cm/5(6)in ending with a WS row.

 

Shape Top

Row 1: *K31(39), k2tog; rep from * once. [64 (80) sts]

Row 2: *P6, p2tog; rep from * to end. [56 (70) sts]

Row 3: *K5, k2tog; rep from * to end. [48 (60) sts]

Row 4: *P4, p2tog; rep from * to end. [40 (50) sts]

Row 5: *K3, k2tog; rep from * to end. [32 (40) sts]

Row 6: *P2, p2tog; rep from * to end. [24 (30) sts]

Row 7: *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end. [16 (20) sts]

Row 8: P2tog to end [8 (10) sts]

Row 9: K2tog to end [4 (5) sts]

Break yarn leaving a long tail, thread this end through remaining stitches and pull tight to secure, use this end to sew the seam to create the hat shape.

Make a pompom using your pompom maker, attach to the top of the hat.
