How to Make

Step 1

Select your fabric and place it into the embroidery hoop. Remember to cut the fabric with a few cm extra on each side to allow for easy finishing.

Mask up the edges of the fabric to avoid fraying.

Step 2
Using a fabric marker, draw the design onto the fabric. I made a paper template first to ensure the design was as central as possible. Make sure that if you are drawing the design onto the backside that it’s backwards to make sure the fluffy side is the right way round! You can remove the fabric if it makes it easier.
Step 3
Next step is to thread your needle. Using the needle threader go through the hole at the top of the punch needle then straight down the inside until it comes out of the bottom of the needle. Then place the end of the yarn through the threader and pull all the way until the yarn is coming out the hole at the top of the needle.
Step 4
Now to start punching! Select where you want to start and push the needle all the way through the fabric, while the needle is on the other side pull the yarn out so that the loose end is hanging out (this will get trimmed off later).

Step 5
Lift the needle out and glide it across the fabric roughly 1cm and back down again. Punch in the direction of the opening of the needle. Complete the outline of the shape first then spiral your way in until the shape is fully covered.

Step 6
To finish a shape, do the same step as when you started. Punch the needle through the fabric, pull through some yarn and this time cut it to release it from the needle.

Step 7
One great thing about punch needling is you can undo mistakes! If you don’t like what you have done, you can pull the yarn and it should unravel. Use the tip of the needle to close the holes and try again.

Step 8
Repeat these steps until you have a finished punch needle piece!
Step 9

Now turn over the hoop and trim back the yarn strands to a similar length as the loops.

If you find that some of the edges have merged together you can take something with a small point and move the loops around, so the colours are in the right place.

Step 10
At this stage if you would like to take it off the hoop, I recommend spreading pva glue on the back first so secure the piece. Or you can keep it on the hoop buy running a long stitch around the edge of your piece and pulling the strings to gather it together.
