How to make

Step 1

To create your macrame rainbows you will need to bind the rope together with your coloured rope. Starting with the red wool first, cut 3 pieces of rope to 30cm and a piece of wire slightly smaller.

Step 2

Hold the rope and the wire in one hand, place the red wool on top of it. Making sure the end of the wool is facing you. Hold all the pieces between your finger and thumb about 4cm down.

Step 3

Start wrapping the wool around the rope and wire. We have used 2 balls to make this process a little quicker. Keep wrapping the wool around the rope and wire until you reach the other end.

Step 4

Once you have wrapped 22cm, trim the wool and sew back through the wrapped wool. You will need to repeat these last few steps with all the other colours. For the yellow, cut the rope to 28cm and bind 20cm, for the green, cut the rope to 26cm and bind 17cm, for the blue, cut the rope to 24cm and bind 15cm, for the lilac, cut the rope 22cm and bind 13cm.

Step 5

Once you have all the pieces ready, bend them into a curve. To sew them together start from the smallest first. Thread your needle with some cotton thread and with the lilac and blue start sewing together in a zig zag pattern.

Step 6

Keep sewing in a zig zag pattern until you reach the end, keep repeating this process adding each colour at a time. Remember to keep bending the bound rope as you go to create the rainbow shape.

Step 7

Once all the pieces are sewn together, take a sharp pair of scissors and trim the white cord so they are all neat and the same size.

Step 8

For 3 metres of bunting you will need to make 9 macrame rainbows.

Step 9

We have added extra colour to our bunting by adding pom poms. Using the same colour wool from the rainbows, you will need to make 24 pom poms approximately 5cm in size. We have made 5 of red, yellow, green, blue and 4 of the purple. Trim them so they are neat and put these to one side.

Step 10

You can create a little loop to hang your bunting by folding over the end of the rope and repeat the beginning steps of binding the rope. You will want to create 2 loops, one at each end.

Step 11

Working from one end of the rope, sew a rainbow 22cm in. To sew, thread your needle with the red wool and sew around the red part of your rainbow and the rope a couple of times. Tie off at the back and trim.

Step 12

You will want to sew a rainbow to the rope every 33cm, this will make sure you have an even spread of rainbows on your bunting.

Step 13

Tie a bundle of pom poms to the rope in between each rainbow to finish off your bunting.
