How to Knit a Cable Beanie Hat
Got the basics of knitting down and looking for your next challenge? This cosy hat design includes a simple cable pattern to help you practise your skills, as well as knitting in the round.
Once you have completed this project, you'll be able to work on your first jumper knitted in the round.

*WI Premium Acrylic x 1 ball
*3.5mm/40cm circular needles (80cm for magic loop method)
*4mm/40cm circular needles (80cm for magic loop method)
*3.5mm dpns or 80cm long circulars (for crown decrease)
*Cable needle
*Stitch marker
*Darning needle
*Pair of scissors
*Pompom maker - optional

22st/30rows in 10x10cm
Suitable for head circumference 52-56cm
Pattern Notes
The hat is knitted in the round from bottom up starting from the ribbing section, followed by simple cables in the body a nd finished with the crown decrease and a pompom. Use shorter circular needles to knit in the round or longer ones to knit using Magic Loop method.
Abbreviations:
St(s) - stitch(es)
K - knit
P - purl
M1R - make one right, right slanting increase; pick up the bar between stitches from back to front, knit into the front of the stitch
M1L - make one left, left slanting increase; pick up the bar between stitches from front to back, knit into the back of the stitch
C4B -
Step 1: Slip 2 sts onto the cable needle.
Step 2: Hold cable needle behind work.
Step 3: Knit 2 sts off of main needle.
Step 4: Knit 2 sts off of cable needle
K2tog - knit two sts together, right slanting single decrease
Ssk - slip slip knit, left slanting single decrease; slip next two stitches knitwise, one at a time, pass them back onto left-hand needle, knit them through back loops together
RIBBING:
Using DK weight yarn and 3.5mm/40cm circular needles cast on 96 stitches.
Place marker. Join carefully in the round being careful not to twist the sts.
Rnd 1: K1, (p2, k2) to the last 3 sts, p2, k1
Rnds 2-40: Repeat Rnd 1
BODY:
Rnd 41: K1, (p2, m1R, k2, m1L, p2, k2) 11 times, p2, m1R, k2, m1L, p2, k1. [120 sts]
Change to 4mm/40cm circular needles.
Rnds 42- 43: K1, (p2, k4, p2, k2) 11 times, p2, k4, p2, k1
Rnd 44: K1, (p2, C4B, p2, k2) 11 times, p2, C4B, p2, k1
Rnds 45 - 48: K1, (p2, k4, p2, k2) 11 times, p2, k4, p2, k1
Rnd 49: K1, (p2, C4B, p2, k2) 11 times, p2, C4B, p2, k1
Repeat Rnds 45 - 49 four more times
CROWN:
Rnd 70: (Ssk, p1, k4, p2, k2, p2, k4, p1, k2tog) 6 times [108 sts]
Rnd 71: Work the pattern
Rnd 72: (K1, p1, k4, p1, k2tog, ssk, p1, k4, p1, k1) 6 times [96 sts]
Rnd 73: Work the pattern
Rnd 74: (Ssk, C4B, k2tog) 12 times [72 sts]
Change to 3.5mm dpns or 80cm circulars (for magic loop)
Rnd 75: Knit
Rnd 76: K1, (k4, k2tog) 11 times, k4, k2tog (last st together with first st of the next round: slip last st, remove marker, place slipped st back on the left hand needle, place marker, k2tog) [60 sts]
Rnd 77: Knit
Rnd 78: (K1, C4B) 12 times
Rnd 79: (K1, k2tog twice) 12 times [36 sts]
Rnd 80: (K2tog) 19 times [19 sts]
FINISHING:
Cut the yarn leaving a 15cm tail, use darning needle or crochet hook to finish off the hat. Make the pompom and attach to the top of the hat.
