The Knitcraft Granny Square Month CAL brings together 25 designers who have each created an amazing granny square for you to enjoy. By the end of the month you will have created a unique blanket that you will keep for years.

This year we have a blanket full of amazing and unique granny squares designed by an incredible group of crochet artists. This month is a great chance to try something new and discover new designers along the way.

Last year we loved to see the unique colour palettes that you created for your blankets and can't wait to see your creativity shine through again! Make sure to enter your granny squares into our competition to be in with a chance of winning a £100 Hobbycraft voucher. Enter here

A new design will be released by 10am throughout the month of July and there will be special takeovers from the designers over on the @Knitcrafthq Instagram. Designs will be released from Monday to Saturday. Make sure to share your progress by tagging @knitcrafthq

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!!! I suffer with extreme anxiety and needed something that would help me focus my mind. I decided that would be crochet, I started this 4 days ago, never crocheted before, I honestly love it! My first square complete and managed to do from the written instructions which has surprised me as I never thought I would be able to do that. The written directions and picks are great for newbies my only recommendation would be if maybe you could do instruction videos? As a visual learner I feel this would have been even more easy if I was able to watch someone doing it. Overall fantastic and thank you for making it inclusive for begginers :)

I like that I’m being pushed out of my comfort zone and forced to learn new techniques, which I might otherwise put off doing. It would be even more helpful if there were detailed videos for each square - sometimes it’s easier to learn from watching, in addition to the written instructions (especially for us beginners).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic variety of squares This is the fourth Granny Square Month Crochet-along I have taken part in. For me, the finished 5x5 blanket of 20cm squares is too small for anything I could use it for, so I like to add more 20cm squares from previous crochet-alongs or other designers to make large 8x7 or 9x8 blankets. I usually go with the recommended colour schemes as the finished blankets are so varied and bright... they look amazing if you have an eclectic decor style or wrapped around you at a festival campfire. I have seen instagram posts where people have used a limited colour palette, such as pastels or pinks or blues, and those blankets look equally special. I love that the squares are the same size each year... by the end of this CAL I will have 100 squares to choose from! It's fun, free (apart for the cost of the yarn) and a brilliant introduction to different stitches I never would have tried otherwise. I did broomstick crochet last year after thinking it looked far too difficult for a beginner. I do prefer patterns with just text, but I'm a reader - the photos must be very helpful to those who usually crochet using video tutorials. For anyone thinking this is too technical, my first ever crocheted piece was patterns from granny square month in 2019, which I did during lockdown. Every time I struggled with a square I contacted the designer on Instagram. They're so friendly and helpful. When I posted it on a beginners crochet group, nobody believed it was a beginners project. There isn't much that can go wrong with these patterns but they look so well designed and constructed when finished that people will think you're some kind of pro.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Badly constructed PDFs These PDFs are written like Instagram tutorials rather than useful patterns. If there are really people who need this much instruction in basic crochet, perhaps you could do two versions of the pattern: one with multiple pages and photos and another with a page of written instruction for those of us who’d like to make the squares away from our screens. I’m also disappointed at the number of squares constructed in rows. To me, granny squares are crocheted in the round.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to try new techniques I learnt to crochet as a 5 year old in the 70s...but I learnt particular types of things. This is a terrific opportunity to try different techniques. I've never done tapestry or colour work before. The detailed instructions are great to learn new skills and for things in my comfort zone I just skip over the extra detail and get on with it . Really looking forward to trying the shaggy purple monster eye that came out today!!!
