C6F – Cable 6 front, slip 3 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, k3, k3 sts from cable needle.
C6B - Cable 6 back, slip 3 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, k3, k3 sts from cable needle.
C4F - Cable 4 front, slip 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, k2, k2 sts from cable needle.
C4B - Cable 4 back, slip 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, k2, k2 sts from cable needle.
Sizes
The sizes below are average sizes for dogs, you may want to make the lengths longer or shorter for your dog. Decide on your size following the chest measurement of your dog and amend lengths of body accordingly if necessary.

X-Small Dog - Chihuahua, Toy and Teacup breeds, Yorkshire terrier.
Small Dog - Jack Russel, Maltese, Miniature Pincher, Pug, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Shitzu, Silky Terrier.
Medium Dog - Terrier, Corgi, Fox Terrier, Schnauzer, Scottish Terrier, West Highland Terrier.
Large Dog - Border Collie, Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Whippet.

Row 1 (RS): P2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.
Row 2 (WS): K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end.
These two rows form 2 x 2 rib and are repeated.
Cable Pattern
Row 1: K1, [p2, C4B] 1 (2:3:4:5) times, p4, C6F, p2, C6F, p2, C6B, p2, C6B, p4, [C4F, p2] 1 (2:3:4:5) times, k1.
Row 2 and foll alt rows: K1, [k2, p4] 1 (2:3:4:5) times, k4, [p6, k2], three times, p6, k4, [p4, k2] 1 (2:3:4:5) times, k1.
Row 3: K1, [p2, k4] 1 (2:3:4:5) times, p4, [k6, p2] three times, k6, p4, [k4, p2] 1 (2:3:4:5) times, k1.

Cast on 42 (50:58:66:74) sts using 4mm needles and work in 2 x 2 rib for 9 (9:9:11:11) rows.

Inc Row: Rib 4, [M1, rib 5] 7 times, M1, rib 3. 50 sts
2nd size only
Inc Row: Rib 3, M1, (rib 4, M1) 11 times, rib 3. 62 sts
3rd size only
Inc Row: [Rib 3, M1, rib 4, m1] 8 times, rib 2. 74 sts
4th size only
Inc Row: Rib 4, M1, [rib 3, M1] 19 times, rib 5. 86 sts
5th size only

Change to 5mm needles and work in cable pattern for your size working from written instructions or chart whichever you prefer, until work measures for 17 (27:34:44:52) cm from cast on edge ending with a WS row placing markers at each end of last row.
Next Row: P1, k2tog, patt to last 3 sts, ssk, p1. 48 (60:72:84:96) sts
Next Row: P1, patt to last st, p1.
Rep last 2 rows 3 (3:5:5:7) times more. 42 (54: 62:74:82) sts
Change to 4mm needles and work in 2 x 2 rib for 6 (8:8:10:10) rows starting with a WS row.
Cast off in rib tightly.
Using 4mm needles cast on 22 (34:42:50:58) sts and work in 2 x 2 rib for 10 (10:10:12:12) rows.
Change to 5mm needles and cont to work in 2 x 2 rib work increases as foll: -
Inc Row (RS): P2, k2, M1, rib to last 4 sts, M1, k2, p2.
Next Row (WS): Rib to end as set working extra sts into 2 x 2 rib pattern.
Rep last 2 rows 6 [8:12:14:16] times altogether. 34 (50:66:78:90) sts
Work 2 (2:2:4:6) rows straight without shaping.
Cast off 6 (8:10:12:14) sts at beginning of next two rows. 22 (34:46:54:62) sts
Work in rib for 8 (12:16:18:22) rows.
Cast on 6 (8:10:12:14) sts at beginning of next two rows. 34 (50:66:78:90) sts
Cont in patt until work measures same as top to markers. Cast off tightly in rib.
Join the side seams from cast on edge to cast off sts for leg opening on both sides using mattress stitch.
Left Leg Trim
Starting at the bottom of leg opening with right side facing using 4mm needles pick up and knit 6 (8:10:12:14) sts along cast on sts, 7 (9:13:15:17) sts along 8 (12:16:18:22) rows of rib, 6 (8:10:12:14) sts along cast off sts, 7 (9:13:15:17) sts along 8 (12:16:18:22) rows of top cable panel. 26 (34:46:54:62) sts
Work in 2 x 2 rib for 8 (10,10:12:14) rows starting with a WS row.
Cast of tightly in rib.
Right Leg Trim
Count along 8 (12:16:18:22) rows from end of seam on top cable panel with right side facing using 4mm needles pick up and knit 7 (9:13:15:17) sts to seam, 6 (8:10:12:14) sts along cast off sts, 7 (9:13:15:17) sts along 8 (12:16:18:22) rows of rib on underside, 6 (8:10:12:14) sts along cast on sts.
