How to Make

Step 1

Cut the following lengths:
Terracotta 13x 4.2m
Sage 13 x 3.8m
Ecru 13 x 3.4m
Note: Tensions in macrame do vary, however the lengths given should be plenty.

Working from right to left attach the yarn to the branch using the Larks Head Knot. Start with Ecru (group 1), then Sage (group 2), then Terracotta (group 3).

Step 3

Working on group 1 only, label the strings from 1 to 26 from left to right. Starting from approx. 3cm down from the top and using string 9 as a guide, work double half hitch knots with strings 8 to 3. Use the guide to curve the shape downwards. This will become the top of the leaf shape.

Step 4

Using string 9 as a guide, work double half hitch knots with strings 8 to 3. Make sure the knots at the beginning and end join with the previous row and there is space left in the centre.

Step 6

Using string 13 as a guide, work double half hitch knots with strings 14 to 24. Again make sure the knots join at the start and finish and there is space left in the middle.

Step 7

Continue to make leaves, changing the guide and amount of strings used as you go. Make sure to leave string 1-2 and 25-26 free.

Continue making leaves until work measures approx. 40cm from top.

Step 8

Section off group 1 and now start to work with group 2.

Start creating leaves with group 2, making sure to see how it matches with the first group as it's best if leaves are at an angle to each other.

Make sure to leave string 1-2 and 25-26 free.

Continue to make leaves until work measure approx. 60cm.

Step 9

Section off group 1 and 2 and start working with group 3. Start creating leaves with group 3 as you did with group 2.
Continue until work measures approx. 80cm.
Make sure to leave string 1-2 and 25-26 free.

Once each section is complete, let all strings hang straight and cut each section approx. 40cm down from the last leaf in a straight line. You should end up with 3 steps at the bottom of the work.
